A Meditation for Remembering a Loved One
In the fall of 2025, one of my students tragically passed away. Moments like these bring an entire college community to a standstill. Families bear unimaginable loss.
In the days that followed, one of my wonderful colleagues and I had the honor and privilege of meeting with her family to offer our support.
During that time, I found myself spending quiet moments in meditation, sending love to my student. As I sat in silence, a simple meditative practice came to me - one that I hoped might gently ease the pain of losing someone we love. I like to think of it as a small gift from my student, and I would like to share it with you.
Begin by finding a comfortable position and gently closing your eyes. Take a few slow, deep breaths. Allow yourself to settle into the present moment. Notice the gentle rise and fall of your breath. Bring your awareness to your heart.
Now, think of your loved one who has passed. From your heart, imagine sending love to their heart. There is nothing to force - simply allow the feeling of love to flow. If you are new to meditation, even 30 seconds is enough.
Next, gently shift your attention. Imagine your loved one sending love from their heart to yours. Receive their love fully.
Now, move to a gentle “loop of love” - notice the continuous flow of love moving between the two of you.
When you are ready, thank your loved one. Smile. Take a few more slow breaths before opening your eyes.
When we next met with her family, I felt compelled to share this meditation with them, especially her mother. My hope was simply that it might offer even a small measure of comfort during an unimaginably difficult time.
It is in that same spirit that I now share it with you. If you are grieving the loss of someone you love, may this practice remind you that love is not confined by time or distance. Love remains.
